Ahoy, Mateys! My name is Buccaneer, but you can call me Bucc. Boy, have I got a story for you! I've been pretty secretive about the first 18 months or so of my life, but I've become something of a local celebrity since being rescued a couple of months ago. I even have my very own Facebook page, called "A Buccaneer's Tail." Please feel free to check it out - you will see lots of photos and videos of me that will help you get to know me even better. In early April, I was discovered near the athletic fields at Jack Britt High School (home of the Buccaneers - hence my name). My rescuer immediately took me to be scanned for a chip and began searching for my family. You see, she recognized that I was either partially or fully blind and did not believe I could have survived on my own for so long, so felt I must surely have a family out there who were probably worried sick about me! However, I didn't have a chip and no family was ever found. I have been in the care of Second Chance Ranch Rescue & Sanctuary, and its wonderful volunteers, ever since. They had me vetted, and I am now up to date on my shots and exams and have been neutered and chipped. Although I do not wear an eye patch like most pirates, I am blind. In fact, I recently had one of my eyes surgically removed and had a procedure done to help protect the other one. I might have been blind since birth (I'll never tell) or the condition may have developed over time. The only thing anyone knows for sure is that I was born with a congenital birth defect called eyelid agenesis which prevented my eyelids from forming properly. This means they also did not seal correctly when I close my eyes or blink, and it also means that my eyelashes were kind of in the wrong place and were able to rub against my eyes. All of this caused a lot of irritation. After seeing an eye specialist, who confirmed my condition, my left eye was surgically removed. I was totally blind in that eye and my eye had shrunken. Removal was a good choice because it helped minimize any chance of further injury or infection. My right eye, while technically blind, does have some light perception and the doctors believe that I have been relying on this to help me navigate. Therefore, I have been able to keep my right eye. I had a procedure to freeze the hair follicles on my right eyelid so that my eyelashes will stop growing, this will help prevent ongoing irritation to my remaining eye. However, since my eyelids still do not seal just right when I blink, my eye will not be able to lubricate itself very effectively. Eye drops help me stay comfortable and be my best self. Enough about the boring medical stuff. Let me tell you about ME! I am an exceptionally handsome and terribly charming young man, believed to be around 1.5 years old. I am also very smart and have very quickly learned to navigate around my foster homes without bumping into too many things! I don't especially like being held, but I am extremely affectionate and will take all the pets and rubs that you'll give me. I will reciprocate by rubbing up against you or snuggling down beside you. I might even snuggle in your lap.....as long as it is my idea. ;) I LOVE to play and enjoy toys that I can smell or hear. I also love to bask in the sunshine. I wouldn't mind the occasional (carefully supervised) venture into a protected back yard - I like to run in grass and listening to birds stimulates my senses! I have no difficulty finding and using my litter box, although I confess that being blind makes it a little difficult to be perfectly neat. My current foster mom suggests that a covered litter box might be a good option. I'm a super friendly fellow, and quite brave.....I've yet to meet a stranger. I've even fallen in love with each of the doctors who have treated me. Other animals, however, might be a tricky subject. I have been able to interact only a little bit with other cats so far, and my foster families have been very careful to make sure I only meet cats who are friendly. Those visits went pretty well. I haven't met any dogs yet, so we aren't sure how that would go. I would make an excellent only pet, or I could perhaps be *slowly* introduced to other pets who have calm and friendly dispositions, but no bullies, please! Allllll that being said....It is finally time for me to find my forever home! No more sailing the high seas for me.....I'm ready for adventure of a different sort. My adoptive family will need to be in the general vicinity of Cary, NC, so that I can follow up with my eye specialist at least once. If you are interested in letting me join your family, please reach out to Second Chance Ranch Rescue and Sanctuary right away to submit your application! I promise you - I'm worth it!
